Traditional Braces at Rivergum Smiles
Family Orthodontics in Mill Park
For decades, traditional braces have been a reliable way to straighten teeth. They’re useful for Rivergum Smiles patients of all ages but are especially popular with teens and young children.
Does My Child Need Braces?
Orthodontic appliances guide teeth into a healthier alignment so that the jaws and biting patterns can function in an optimal manner. Children often experience dental health issues that can jeopardise the alignment and development of their adult smile. When we intervene earlier on, those concerns can often be avoided.
Your child may need to get braces if he or she has experienced
- Tongue thrusting
- Extended thumb/finger sucking
- Premature tooth loss
- Speech difficulties
Caring for Braces
Fixed orthodontics require special care and maintenance during treatment, as the brackets and wires can tend to collect plaque and food during the day. In addition to scheduling a checkup every six months, encourage your child to clean around each tooth with a water flosser or special interproximal brush.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
- Be careful to avoid sticky, crunchy or acidic foods, as these can cause the brackets to pop off or teeth.
- Keep your scheduled appointments, as adjustments will be needed to progress each phase of tooth movement to the next.
- Orthodontic wax can be used to cover any appliances that are irritating the inside of your lips or cheeks, until your mouth becomes more accustomed to wearing braces.
Are Braces Right for You?
